Operation Bolo During the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese People’s Air Force (VPAF, NVAF, VN ADAF) was acutely aware that they could not stand toe-to-toe with the F4 Phantom in air battles and so relegated themselves to intercepting flights of vulnerable bombers, mainly the F105 Thunderchief. Operation Bolo was devised in 1967 to destroy NVAF Migs and their Chinese trained pilots by having flights of Phantoms, loaded for air combat, to fly in bomber formation along common bombing routes, thus luring in unsuspecting NVAF Migs that would then be mauled in air-to-air combat. The operation was so successful that the NVAF would withdraw to their airbases for the remainder of the American involvement in the war, only sortieing out to defend Hanoi or their airbases. Even North Vietnamese sources cite Operation Bolo as the darkest days for the fledgling NVAF.
